How Thompson Congregational, United Church of Christ Gives Back to the Community

We at Thompson Congregational, United Church of Christ have done and continue to do numerous things to benefit our community. We hosted a free ice cream social to bring the community together. We also collected and blessed over 230 backpacks for the children in Thompson and we prayed for all the students, teachers, staff, and administration that attended our service. In addition, we had a booth at Thompson Community Day, and we blessed animals from dogs to horses on the Thompson Common. We held a fall festival that was open to everyone and provided a safe place for children to trunk or treat, and we blessed the town leadership as they began to serve their terms. Furthermore, we collected jars of peanut butter for the TEEG food pantry, and collected presents as a part of TEEG Holiday Giving. We have been and continue to be a part of the Weekend Warriors, which provides food to hungry children in our community on the weekends. Recently, we were able to donate over 100 baskets each filled with soup, cereal, a vegetable, protein, pasta, and sauce to TEEG. Our partnership with TEEG allows us to connect with and help community members in need. We partnered with Thompson Recreation to present summer movies on the Thompson Common, complete with popcorn and water. We recently held events to bring the community together, such as our fall festival and our Election Day prayer vigil.

In addition to our many past events, we ae also planning future events to better our community.  Refer to our Events page for more information. Thompson Congregational, United Church of Christ is dedicated to helping our community and giving back in every way we can.

Holbrook Fund

At Thompson Congregational, United Church of Christ we take seriously Christ’s call to love our neighbor; and so, we are continually looking for new ways to serve our community. Dr. Lowell Holbrook was born on October 6, 1818, he was a member of our church, practiced medicine in the town, and was the surgeon of the 18th Connecticut Regiment Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Dr. Holbrook set up a fund for Thompson residence needing assistance with their medical bills.

We wish to honor Dr. Holbrook’s legacy while also being a prophetic witness to the community we serve. We are well aware that every family has been touched by the horrors of addiction. It kills individuals and hurts our families and community. Therefore, on May 1, 2018 Thompson Congregational, United Church of Christ will begin distributing money from the Holbrook Fund for those Thompson residents who are seeking recovery from addiction.

This is a new way for our church to serve the town, and we will continue to show our neighbors that we love you. If you wish to contribute to this effort checks may be sent to the church at PO Box 308, Thompson, CT 06277 designated for the Holbrook Fund.

As always, no matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey you’re welcome here!
